GEMINI Mk 2 For Sale
Chassis No. FJ MkII 1041
Original owner not known. Advertised in April 1974 Motor Sport as: “Front-engined 1959 single seater Formula Junior Gemini racing car. Interesting hill climb/sprint car.” Telephone 09084 2651 Woburn Sands.
Purchased by Tony Johns for Graeme Steinfort and arrived in Australia in November 1974.
It went through a number of hands, with little racing, until bought by Tony Caldersmith in 1983 and restored to original Gemini specifications.
CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sport) 5th Category (historic) logbook issued in 1981 (no. N4481) and a Certificate of Description in 1991 (no. L.067.01.01).
Raced pretty continuously from 1983 to 1991.
In 2006 Tony gave it a complete refurbishment and ran it at the Tasman Revival meeting in December 2006. It completed Targeted Scrutiny in 28/08/06.
It has generally run in the Australian Group Lb class (1946 to 1960 racing cars) and been a consistent ‘under 1500cc winner’).
It has a Ford engine Ford gearbox, with Needham close ratios, Twin Webers, near new (one meeting) Dunlop CR65 450x15 and 500x15 tyres.
Geminis ran Series 1 BMC nosepieces in their own magnesium housing. Tony has have two ratios; 4.55 and 4.8. Some spares and special tools.
Further notes:
The only thing different in the engine is the short motor. Tony used the the FJ head, carbys, cam etc. mounted on the 1200 block to run it in some non-FJ events while he built up a new 997 FJ short motor. Tony has the 997 motor which has not been built up due to other projects taking priority. The 1200 block has the original Cosworth A6 cam in it. Remote gear shift removed and replaced with center shift but easily replacable. In the UK people are suggesting to Tony somewhere around (A$80,000). the car is in Australia and Tony would be open to offers.

1950’s Ford 10 Special

  • Identified by Kelvin Brown (Author of ‘The Kiwi Connection’ – Bucker Book) as: “A Jarvie Body of the mid 1950s designed to Ford 10 dimensions and Buckler use….there are very few Jarvie bodies that I know of.” (His letter can be supplied)
  • The fiberglass body will need some repair but is complete minus; doors, bonnet and windscreen.
  • The body’s underframe is a simple home-made looking affair. Probably original and adequate to the task. This is currently just sitting on the chassis. Interestingly, it appears the body just ‘sat’ on the underframe, there’s no sign of it being fixed down!
  • The chassis is a recent donor Ford 10, standard rolling chassis in good order. I took it from a mobile car which rode and stopped very well indeed.
  • The engine/gbox is standard 100E. I was told it was a ‘really good runner’ but this is unproven.
  • An additional Ford 10 (cut down to a truck) donor vehicle can come with the package if required.
  • History – sorry, all I know is that it was found on a farm in the Wanganui area, it came with the property but no backstory. It has obviously been used on the road and has a few modifications that someone may recognise. It has dozens of layers of paint so may be something under there to help id its past. There is a faint sign of ‘racing number circle’ on one side?

Price is $1000 negotiable or swap for something interesting (on wheels). I may add cash if it’s really interesting! Contact: Pat Boyle, ph 06 327 6158 MARTON. Email: pat.boyle“at”xtra.co.nz
